New Project, page one by cmichaelhall
New Project, page one
The opening splash page of my new comics project is complete! Well, it isn't lettered yet, but you get my point. Drawn in Manga Studio EX 5.
Batman and Netflix by cmichaelhall
Batman and Netflix
Originally drawn for ACE Magazine, which--sadly--seems to have gone to the great newsstand in the sky, like so many magazines before it (especially ones that've hired me over the years). It was a fun gig while it lasted.
Big House Funnies by cmichaelhall
Big House Funnies
This now-abandoned strip was originally slated to appear in an anthology comic I was planning to publish, but I've since back-burnered that project and canceled this strip in particular. When I created this strip (expanding on an idea I originally had around 2004), I was completely unaware that Chip Zdarsky (now the artist on the critically acclaimed--and bloody BRILLIANT--comic book Sex Criminals) once created a strip called Prison Funnies. Now, however, I know. And since my own interest in comedy has waned and the idea was accidentally very similar to something that's already out there...canceled. But here it is anyway, for your enjoyment.

The Sad Part: Queenie was going to be a fucking STAR.
Hipster Bigfoot Easter Promo by cmichaelhall
Hipster Bigfoot Easter Promo
An Easter promo for my forthcoming anthology comic, HIPSTER BIGFOOT.

Originally, comments were disabled for this one, but then I thought, "Eh, what the hell?" However, I want to post some caveats regarding the comments: Gushing praise is welcome; complaints will be filed as per standard operating procedure (i.e., ignored). Comments voicing righteous indignation will be disregarded or ridiculed depending on my mood and/or said comments' potential for comedy.

Some of you will find this comic "blasphemous" and/or "in bad taste." The very nature of satire is such that it pokes fun at sacred cows; learning to cope with satire (and accept its role/value in the development of critical and analytical thinking) is an important aspect of life in modern civilized society. If that's more than you can handle, shuffle on. Whether or not this comic constitutes satire in the accepted definition is somewhat debatable, but the message underlying its creation is certainly satirical in its intent. Whether or not it succeeds in the eye of the audience is A. wholly subjective, and B. not my fucking problem. :)

Inking Jack by cmichaelhall
Inking Jack
I just finished inking this Jack Kirby drawing of Devil Dinosaur and Moon Boy. Kirby is one of my artistic heroes and Devil was one of my favorite characters as a kid, so I hope I did them both proud. (Microns, Winsor-Newton Series 7 #2 brush, Speedball Super Black ink)
I wrote, directed, and edited this commercial for the Independence Public Library in Independence, KS.  Before I went full-time as a freelancer, I was a librarian; now that I've decided that full-time freelancing isn't for me (I like the freedom to turn down clients when the work they're offering doesn't excite me), I'm back at work at a library.  Thing is, though, libraries always need cool promotional tools, so while you might at first think it's boring work, you'd be wrong...I get to do all KINDS of creative stuff!  Case in point:  this commercial.

I often say I didn't get serious about making comics until I decided film school wasn't for me, but truth be known, I don't think I could ever turn my back entirely on any of the media in which I enjoy working.  I will always have the film bug, same as I have the comics bug.  Maybe someday I'll actually get around to that feature I keep threatening to make...

Anyway, if you want to see the commercial, Click HERE!

I am a writer and cartoonist with a keen interest in self-publishing. I was heavily involved in the small press scene of the late 1990s, and I still occasionally self-publish the odd title, but most of my current work is in the area of educational comics. The first of my educational books, "Library of the Living Dead," has been downloaded over 1.8 million times since it went online in March of 2011. I am currently working under contract to produce more educational comics, as well as writing projects for Ape Entertainment and Viper Comics. I also teach a college course in comics and cartooning and, due to my background in libraries and educational settings, make public speaking appearances on the potential and value of comics and graphic novels in the educational environment.

Current Residence: Southeastern Kansas

Online versions of my educational comics:
"Monster Clash: Using the Wilton Library...Ferociously!", custom-created for the Wilton Library Association of Wilton, CT…
"Library of the Living Dead: Your Guide to Miller Library at McPherson College," custom-created for McPherson College of McPherson, KS…
"Supreme Librarians in Metaspace," custom-created for the School of Library and Information Management at Emporia State University…
"Sundown at the Library," custom-created for the Graham Library at Coffeyville Community College…
